My favorite self-defense tool for real estate

Notice I said “tool” and not weapon. Let me tell you a story… about 2 years ago there was an agent attacked at an open house out west. She had both a pepper spray acolt-tac-pennd a knife on her, but didn’t use either one. Why? Because her MIND never said it was time to take action. Your mind is your real weapon, and everything we may carry is just a tool. You could have tools in every pocket, but if your MIND never says “GO” you will not be able to protect yourself. On the other hand when your mind says it’s time, you will FIND a tool to use.

That’s what today’s newsletter is all about.

There are many places that we as Realtors go on a daily basis where traditional tools (like firearms, pepper sprays, tasers and knives) are restricted. Places like the post office, a school facility, the court house, and airports. But there is one tool that is not restricted ANYWHERE in the WORLD! And that’s why it’s one of my favorites! It’s called a Tactical Pen. Yep, you’ve got it. An ink pen. But not just any pen, these are made with aircraft-grade aluminum that can withstand any beating you can throw at it. Besides, it’s not weird for you to have a pen to sign contracts, is it?

If you’re in the Central Florida area, we’re having a class on the 29th of October to show you some simple tactics to use your pen for self-defense, but if you’re not (or can’t make it) here’s some tips:

  1. Grip: there are several ways to hold the pen (or flashlight, or kubotan) These include “icepick style” with your thumb over the flat end and the other fingers wrapped around it (this would be used to strike your attacker with a hammer fist), “microphone style” for jabbing, or even centered in your fist to add some oomph to a punch.
  2. Where: Anywhere you can! 🙂 But seriously, this tool can be used on soft tissue areas, bony joint areas, pressure points, or around the head and neck
  3. Why: It acts as a force multiplier for your strikes, also as a tool of leverage, and is just as effective in soft areas (think of the brachial nerve in your upper bicep) or bony areas (like the back of your hand or your elbow). It can also be used to control your attacker such as putting it behind their wrist and using leverage to take them down.
  4. How: The simple striking techniques don’t really require any special skills, but some of the other techniques will work better if you’ve been shown how to use them. There are Youtube training videos, live classes, and we’re working on some Real Estate specific training for you.

If you’d like info on the Class on the 29th, please CLICK HERE. Class is from 9-noon and is near I4 and 46 in Sanford. If more than 3 people want to come as a group, reply to this message and ask me for a group coupon code. I will have some different styles of pens with me, but if you’d like to order one and can’t come, click the picture of my favorite pen (it has a stylus on one end AND a mini-flashlight!)
